Hoffmann Mineral "fills" Russian market  #12 (94), 2010

During the K-2010 show Rainer Luttich, Area Sales Manager at Hoffmann Mineral told Plastiks Magazine about expanding supply of functional polymer and elastomer fillers to Russia

– Mr. Luttich what are your impressions of K-2010?
– Since 1989 Hoffmann Mineral was exhibiting at the K show, so this was our eights show. We are very satisfied with the results, because for us the show is a meeting point to all our customers and distributors worldwide and to present our functional filler to all other visitors.
And to have good discussions we served our guests original Bavarian white sausages with a local weed beer.
–Plastics processing is a new application field for your products…
– Yes, we have started operating this market quite recently by launching new products on basis of Calcined Siliceous Earth. Neuburg Siliceous Earth is a sediment, which was deposited 95 million years ago on the limestone strata from the later Jurassic period and fell in so-called karst funnels where it was preserved.
Classic Neuburg Siliceous Earth - also called Sillitin and Sillikolloid – is a natural combination of corpuscular, crypto-crystalline and amorphous silica and lamellar kaolinite: a loose structure impossible to separate by physical methods. This base material and a downstream thermal process lead to a calcined product which in comparison with standard grades offers additional application benefits as a functional filler. The typical particle structure of Neuburg Siliceous Earth with nano-scale primary particles remains unchanged by the heat treatment.
The base for the calcined products is the standard grade Sillitin Z 86 which has long been used in a multitude of applications. The calcinations of the Sillitin helps to drive off the crystal water present in the kaolinite portion and to generate new, largely amorphous mineral phases. The crypto-crystalline silica portion remains inert under the temperature chosen; this is why the final product is free from crystobalite. Through an integrated air classifier process grain sizes > 15 µm are being removed.
– What filler grades did you present at your booth?
– We presented our classic products called Sillitin, Sillikolloid and Aktisil, which are used as a functional filler in rubber industry, plastic industry, coatings and adhesives. The main focus was laid on the new products on basis calcined siliceous earth such as Aktisil AM which is preferentially recommended for the use in polyamides, and in particular Polyamid 6.6.
– Who is engaged in promotion of your products in Russia?
– Our Russian agency is DBH Osthandelsgesellschaft. We are actually working together in the rubber market, which is the focus of DBH. But we also have customers in the cosmetic industry and welding electrodes. At the moment the Russian market for elastomer products is growing. The market for specialties like our functional filler is also a growing in Russia.
