Equipment market: the recovery after the crisis  #1-2 (95-96), 2011

Yuriy Lozhechko, Doctor of Science, executive director at OOO Biplant

After the severe slump during the financial and economical crisis the Russian market of plastics processing equipment is progressively taking over its lost positions. The condition and prospects of the market are reviewed in our expert’s article.

Refitting trend
Today the total volume of polymers produced in Russia is estimated as 3 million tons a year. According to JSC Alliance Analytics the Russian demand for plastic products has increased by 214.5 percent between 2000 and 2010.
In the pre-crisis year 2007 the production volume of plastic products in Russia accounted for more than 3 million tons. In 2008-2009 the index decreased downto 2.2-2.3 million tons a year (about 75 percent of 2007 level). In 2010 production volume once again experienced growth: according to expert estimates it accounted for 2.7 million tons a year. The dynamics of production volume for plastic products in 2005-2010 is shown in Table 1.
In Russian about 5200 companies are engaged in plastics processing. 25 percent of equipment stock involved in production of polymer articles are out-of-date machines operating for more than 20 years. The main factor restraining refitting of production facilities is low financial solvency of customers. However it should be noted in recent years Russian processors purchasing new and innovative equipment more and more often. Demand leaders of the Russian market are represented with injection molding machines featuring upto 450 tons clamping force.
The Russian market of plastics processing machinery is defined with a complete dependence on imports. Domestically produced machines and plants represent less than 5 percent share in the lower tier. The situation is partially driven by the fact the major ex-USSR producers of injection molding machines now are situated in Ukraine and Belorussia.

Import-depended market.
There are more than 250 companies operating at the Russian market supplying foreign machines.
Injection molding machines are sold by more than 60 companies, extrusion equipment for films – more than 40, extrusion lines for profiles – more than 30, extrusion blow molding machines – more than 35.
In terms of quantity of injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, peripheral and other equipment, Asian manufacturers hold more than 2/3 of the market and European ones – about 1/3 (Fig. 1-3).
Between 2005-2010 there can be distinguished three stages of processing equipment purchasing intensity:
- 2005-2007 – constant growth of purchases upto 600 million euro
- 2008-2009 – 2.5-3 fold slump of purchase volumes
- 2010 – gradual growth of purchasing volumes with prospects of achieving pre-crisis level at 2012.
According to official statistics in 2007 Russia imported 1281 injection molding machines including both new and used ones. Asian and European machines accounted for 2/3 and 1/3 of imports correspondingly. The total value of imported processing equipment in 2007 exceeded 600 million euro and total volume of investments in plastics processing was close to 1 billion euro.
In 2010 a growth of injection molding machines purchasing was experienced. In the first half of 2010 more than 500 injection molding machines were imported showing 2.6 fold growth compared to the same period of 2009. Chinese machines accounted for 58 percent in terms of quantity and 18 percent in terms of value. Figure 7 shows countries involved in importing injection molding machines in Russia in the first half of 2010.
From January to October 2010 Russia has imported 874 injection molding machines which is more than twice as much compared to the whole 2009 when 418 machines were imported. The top 10 of injection molding machines manufacturers supplying Russian market include such well-established companies as Haitian International Holding, Engel Austria, Chen Hsong Machinery, Sumitomo (SHI) Demag Plastics Machinery.
In 2009-2010 the Russian market was penetrated by new players such as Zafir Plastics Machinery, Japan Steel Works (JSW) and others who progressively increase their turnover.
In the forthcoming 2 years purchasing volumes of processing equipment are expected to grow by 15-20 percent a year.
