Multipack builds a BOPS production in Byelorussia

A new mono- and biaxially oriented polystyrene production will be built by Multipack, member of Alcopack international holding.
Heretofore this packaging material has been imported from Western Europe. As for Byelorussian plant, it possesses a number of advantages that allow giving a dare to foreign manufacturers, for example in goods supply, distribution, quality and expenses volume. Multipack counts on proliferation of British and American supermarkets and hypermarkets using thermoformed BOPS in foods packaging in the region.
The new plant is going to manufacture three-layer polystyrene sheets for general usage and styrene-butadiene copolymers to achieve desired transparency, gloss, strength and formability characteristics.
Now a building for the new production is being built, covering 8 thousand sq. meters area and having all needed engineering networks and communications. Basic equipment will be supplied by Brueckner and the auxiliaries – by other West-European companies. By the end of the year Multipack expects to get and to install the machinery. In the first quarter of 2006 the production is to be set in operation.
The plant’s productive capacity will be from 12 to 20 thousand tons a year, depending on the product. That is, polystyrene films for thermoforming can be manufactured 20 thousand tons a year. The line will be used for making BOPS films with 100-800 micrometers and 25-100 micrometers thickness range and thermosetting cross-oriented (monoaxially-oriented) polystyrene films from 30 to 80 micron wide for making thermocontractable labels with sleeve technology.
The new production will use both Russian and West-European raw materials. Multipack is negotiating this question with BASF, Atofina, Nizhnekamskneftekhim, Stairovit and other companies. Styrene-butadiene copolymer used in BOPS production is not manufactured in Russia, so Multipack is going to buy it from BASF, Atofina and other European producers.
The project’s cost is estimated at 20 million euro.
