European machinery sales will drop 30% in 2009

Sales of core plastics and rubber machinery in Europe are expected to drop 30% this year, as the economic crisis causes production to fall 22%, says Euromap

Euromap, Europe’s association for plastics and rubber machinery manufacturers, says production from its members will decrease to approximately €13.6bn as a result.
Export demand fell 35% during the first half of 2009. Exports to eastern Europe and North and Latin America fell drastically during the period and demand from Asia could not compensate for the loss, says the association.
“The slowdown in 2009, which Europe’s plastics and rubber equipment manufacturers had predicted, turned out to be a deep slump and hit the branch much more than it expected at last year’s General Assembly in Bologna,” says Bernhard Merki, Euromap president.
The sector was hit first – and most noticeably – by a drop in demand from automotive suppliers. Demand from packaging and construction manufacturers also decreased.
During 2008, demand for machinery was stable, despite a downturn in new orders during the fourth quarter. Demand for core machinery and moulds and dies stayed relatively flat at 1% and 1.5% respectively. Peripheral equipment sales were up 4.1%.
Only sales of flexographic printing machines showed negative growth last year of -7%.
Euromap says the fall in orders seems to have bottomed out, with expectations in the plastics and rubber converting industry improving.
“The demand for plastics and rubber machines slowly seems to be on the increase again – and yet financing remains an obstacle,” says Merki. “The industry expects an upward trend in time for the K2010 at the latest.”
