Fosta-Tek Optics Inc., a Leominster molder of plastic components for optics and lenses, has purchased an all-electric Engel injection molding machine, an e-motion with 420 tons of clamping force.
Fosta-Tek’s products include prism-corrected lenses for night-vision goggles, protective eyewear, automotive instrument panel components and high-precision military optics that match the quality of diamond-turned glass. Vice President Jim LeBlanc said Fosta-Tek has added 18 Engel machines over the past 12 years, including seven all-electric presses. “We have to mold parts that meet demanding specifications, parts requiring shot-after-shot consistency, for instance, which is not an easy tank considering the shrink rate of resins such as polycarbonates and cyclo-olefins,” LeBlanc said. Fosta-Tek also uses injection-compression process, and sequential injection-compression, to make its optical parts. York, Pa.-based Engel Machinery Inc. recently delivered the press.
