Johnson Controls, a US manufacturer of automotive parts, is considering starting up production of automobile seats in the Russian city of Togliatti.
Details of the project were not disclosed, but according to some Russian media reports, the volume of production is expected to amount to about 40,000 sets of automobile seats per year at the initial stage. Investment in the project is estimated at €35-€40m. The first reports about the plans of Johnson Controls to establish a plant for the production of automobile seats in Togliatti were announced in 2007. However, the project was suspended because of the economic recession. Johnson Controls will be the second foreign manufacturer of automotive seats to have production facilities in Togliatti. The other is the Slovenian "TPV Rus", which is expected to start supplying seats for the Lada Granta car (new AvtoVAZ’s flagship model) in late April. Johnson Controls already has production facilities in Russia. The company operates a plant in the Shushary, St. Petersburg region, and a plant for the production of central air conditioners and control cabinets in Khimki (Moscow Region).
