Ecological aspects of choosing polymer materials for car parts

Report points For the last two decades the application of polymer materials in car construction has increased greatly, and also in large-scale interior and exterior parts. Ecological standard of polymer materials applied in motor-car construction is characterized by three aspects. The first, polymer materials while processed into parts must not influence harmfully upon environment, nature, and upon health as well. The second, choosing polymer materials for special car components should be done in such a way that the ecological standard of the car must not be decreased. The third, after the operation life of the used car and components is over the used polymer materials must retain the basic property – being suitable for recycling for further application in various industries. Special ecological importance considering the prospects lies in capability of polymer materials for being recycled. For example, polymer materials containing non-saturated carbon-carbon connections are easily oxidized in the process and exposed to ozone-aging. This concerns ABS and divinyl-styrene thermoplastic elastomers. Their secondary application is problematic. And most available at the moment the thermoplastic compositions on the basis of polyolefins (PP, PE), polyamides (PA-6, PA-66) and linear polyethers (PBT, PET) are 100% recycled without any problems. Besides, they meet other aspects of ecological safety, in processing sphere in particular (by injection molding, extrusion, extrusion blowing) and in maintenance sphere (in car construction).
