China to experience engineering plastics boom

China expects its consumption of engineering plastics to have risen by nearly 11% in 2011 to 2.7m tonnes as a number of sectors, notably the automotive industry, witness rapid growth.
According to a report in, China’s National Development & Reform Commission and the Ministry of Industry & Information Technology expect demand for engineering plastics for the next five years to grow by more than 10% per annum.
While more than 40% of the world’s engineering plastics is used in cars, in China this figure is currently around 10%.
It is argued that development trends in automotive such as weight reduction and energy efficiency will also take hold in China in the near future, where the average use of plastic per vehicle is 78kg, versus a figure of 120kg in developed countries.
