Both production volume and turnover of German plastic material producers increased in 2011; volume by 1.4% to 20.7m tonnes and turnover by 7.5% to €25.3bn. Announcing the results at a 10 May briefing, PlasticsEurope Deutschland said the results mean Germany’s industry has reached or even exceeded pre-crisis levels. The association’s president Dr Wolfgang Hapke said that 2010 was a year of fast recovery, while 2011 was a period of consolidation. Volume growth in 2011 was “not at all bad, given that our production capacities were highly utilised – we have produced a lot and sold a lot”, he said. In term of application, 34% of plastics consumed in Germany go to packaging, 24% to building construction and 9% to electrical & electronics (E&E) applications.
