Automotive company Volkswagen has lightened the instrument panel structure of the new VW Golf 7 by 500g by using the MuCell process from Trexel. “The instrument panel on the former model of the Golf weighed 3kg… and the 500g taken out of the weight of the new Golf 7 instrument panel is just a start toward even more significant weight reductions to come,” Steve Braig, president and CEO of Trexel, said in a statement. The process saves material and lowers processing temperatures, says the company. The finished part is said to have less inert stress and improved dimensional stability. The VW Golf 7 is the second vehicle where the instrument panel is made using the MuCell process, as the panel of the Ford Escape/Kuga IP is made in the same way.
